What is entrepreneurship?

Well, it means different things to different people. Bruce Bachenheimer, Pace University, summarizes it best.

"Entrepreneurship is much broader than the creation of a new business venture. At its core, it is a mindset, a way of thinking and acting. It is about imagining new ways to solve problems and create value."

What's most exciting about entrepreneurship, is the endless opportunity. Further education teaches us that career progression is linear. You start on a trajectory, and after 40 years you'll be at the top. While this is true in certain cases, entrepreneurship opens so many doors than the conventional path. And within this broad definition, there are many subclasses; social, lifestyle, technology, scalable, intrapreneurial, etc. It’s more than just a job. Entrepreneurship also challenges you to address your wellbeing, health, relationships and purpose.

It's about the pursuit of a vision, at an opportune time, with limited resources and accepting a level of risk. So is it for everyone? Probably not.

The jury is divided on this one, but personally, I believe if the desire to fulfil your vision is at its strongest, then you must have what it takes. Many successful entrepreneurs share similar characteristics, but most importantly is self-motivation.

Many periods in history, entrepreneurs are born during times of great adversity. Hardship breeds opportunity to create solutions to problems. In the veterinary profession, we risk continuing to lose talented veterinary individuals to other sectors. Or worse, they stagnate in dead-end roles when they had the potential to make a significant difference.

I prefer a reality where we nurture a wave of veterinary entrepreneurship, which could play a crucial part in enhancing the following areas;

- Animal welfare.

- Agriculture and environmental issues.

- Veterinary career opportunities.

- Medicine and biotechnology.

- Professional wellbeing.

Never in history has there been a better time to start your own venture. The financial and educational resources available are greater than ever. Arguably, we’re a bit late to the party. Entrepreneurship has been a buzzword for other sectors for years, with many large companies promoting this mindset internally.
