This course will explore the Veterinary Nurses’ role in the management of chronic medical cases, through the development of nurse clinics as part of a vet-led strategy.

There is enormous value in empowering nurses to have greater input into the management of medical cases in practice. Nurse management of cases better utilises veterinary nurses in the medical nursing discipline, and has the potential to provide more contact with clients and their chronically ill pets, and therefore improve standard of care and quality of life for these patients.

Potential patient disease conditions will range from osteo-arthritis, through to diabetes, Addison’s disease, liver and renal disease, Cushings disease (HAC) disease, hypo and hyper-thyroidsim, food sensitivities and chronic gastrointestinal conditions.

We will look at management of these disease conditions, including the involvement of veterinary nurses in ongoing diagnostic testing for monitoring purposes.

It is imperative to appreciate and adhere to guidelines set out within the Code of Professional Conduct, and how the guidance aligns with the work that RVNs can undertake in practice, and this topic will be addressed on the course.

We will also consider how to effectively communicate as a clinical team in provision of veterinary care, and creation of standardised protocols for different medical conditions will be addressed as part of the course, and by the course participant in creation of their final coursework.

This course will explore the Veterinary Nurses' role in the management of chronic medical cases, through the development of nurse clinics as part of a vet-led strategy.
