Membership milestone reflects the SPILLERS™ brand’s commitment to tackling equine obesity in the UK by 2035, with enhanced online resources giving horse owners evidence-based support for healthier weight management.

The SPILLERS™ Slimmers’ Club has hit a phenomenal membership target, with 15,000 owners now united by one goal: helping their horses and ponies achieve a healthier weight, for a happier, longer future.

Launched in 2021, the dynamic SPILLERS Slimmers’ Club on Facebook is a central part of the SPILLERS brand’s ongoing mission to help end equine obesity in the UK by 2035. It provides a community where horse owners can share real-life experiences, exchange practical tips and access trusted guidance to support their horses on their weight-management journeys.

This membership landmark sits beside an enhanced online SPILLERS Slimmers’ Hub, featuring expanded educational resources designed to help owners make informed, evidence-based decisions about equine weight management.

Putting science into practice

To put science into daily practice, the enhanced Slimmers’ Hub delivers clear, actionable guidance on sustainable weight management. Key areas of support include:
  • Obesity-Related Risks: Understanding the dangers of excess weight, including laminitis, Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), and insulin dysregulation.
  • Nutritional Strategies: Practical calorie management, forage selection, grazing tactics, and the science behind hay soaking.
  • Lifestyle & Exercise: Tailored exercise plans, enrichment, and long-term obesity prevention.

By combining scientific knowledge and practical management advice, the resources aim to help owners understand not only how to manage excess weight, but also why a consistent, individualised approach is vital for long-term equine health.

The SPILLERS brand’s dedication to improving horse welfare is backed by its extensive research work in the areas of EMS, obesity, laminitis and weight management.

The scientific foundation of the SPILLERS brand’s nutritional guidance is underpinned by the expertise of the Waltham Petcare Science Institute, providing a research-led approach to equine nutrition. It is headed by Dr. Edd Knowles, Global Equine Science & Nutrition Director, Mars Horsecare and Head of the Waltham Equine Studies Group.

Edd is behind award-winning research1 on the relationship between insulin dysregulation and laminitis risk, highlighting the importance of effective nutritional management. In total the SPILLERS brand has been involved with 100+ published research papers relating to laminitis, insulin dysregulation and obesity in the past 20+ years.

A shared commitment to healthier horses

The SPILLERS brand’s focus on equine weight management extends to the wider equestrian community. As the official feed supplier to Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), the brand was able to engage with competitors last month to promote the importance of healthy weight management:
  • 71 horses and ponies were weighed by the SPILLERS team.
  • The 1–9 Henneke scale was used for Body Condition Scoring (BCS).
  • An average BCS of 5.5 was recorded—generally accepted as just slightly above ideal, showing encouraging awareness of healthy weights across the sector.

“Reaching 15,000 members in the SPILLERS Slimmers’ Club is a massive achievement for us,” said Claire Dyett, Marketing Manager at Mars Horsecare, home of the SPILLERS brand.

"It reflects the importance of giving horse owners access to practical advice, reliable information and a supportive community. Our interaction at HOYS was also very reassuring, with the average weights recorded being just 0.5 beyond ideal.

“We’re continually impressed by the commitment of our Slimmers’ Club members to managing their horses’ weight. As membership continues to grow, so does our focus on equipping horse owners with the knowledge, confidence and practical tools to help end equine obesity in the UK by 2035.”
