A leading veterinary referral hospital in the South West has appointed a new Consultant to support the growth of its Dermatology service.

Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Dermatology Caroline Smith BA VetMB CertAVP MRCVS has joined CVS’ Bristol Vet Specialists three-strong dermatology team, led by EBVS & RCVS Recognised Specialist in Veterinary Dermatology Natalie Barnard.

Originally from Gloucester, Caroline graduated from the University of Cambridge, started her career in mixed practice, and became a small animal vet in 2010. She completed her Dermatology Advanced Practitioner Certificate in 2018.

Caroline has since worked as the clinical director of a large multi-site first opinion practice in South Wales, predominantly seeing a dermatology-based case load and taking local referrals.

Speaking about her new appointment, Caroline said: “My first love is clinical work. My journey into the world of dermatology was inspired by wanting to do better for my patients. In general practice dermatology cases represent such a huge part of the case load and there are so many welfare issues associated with them.

“I appreciate the frustrations of trying to manage tricky cases in a general practice setting. But getting a proper diagnosis and the right management saves time and money by avoiding flare ups and inappropriate treatments. So I'm really looking forward to being able to support more primary care clinicians with those stubborn cases.”

Outside of work, Caroline lives in the Forest of Dean with her stripy Lurcher, husband, two children and a mischief of rats.
