The body representing the UK pet food industry also calls on pet owners to shop sensibly, advising there is enough pet food for all.

Michael Bellingham, Chief Executive of the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) explains: “Thanks to the work of our PFMA members and recognition by Government, there is a good supply of pet food and we encourage pet owners to shop sensibly.”

He continues: “The PFMA represents over 90% of pet food manufacturers in the UK and we are responsible for feeding a nation of around 50 million pets. Our members are working tirelessly across the pet food supply chain to ensure everybody continues to have access to nutritious, safe, and affordable pet foods during the Coronavirus pandemic.”

The Government recognises that food for pets is as essential as food for people, which is why those working in pet food production and the ingredients supply chain are classified as ‘key workers’, and that pet shops can remain open during mandatory retail closures.

Michael concludes: “Our heartfelt thanks go out to all those who are striving on our behalf. Ensuring human health is also a number one concern. Our members have instructed their workforces to follow appropriate measures by adhering to the official Government advice to protect themselves and others from Coronavirus.”
