The FEI has further demonstrated its commitment to bring up-to-date equine health information to equine vets and horse owners with the launch of its new online videos on the topic of equine influenza - Equine influenza for equine vets and Equine Influenza: a horse owner’s guide.

The online guides are hosted on FEI Campus, the FEI’s free of charge and cutting-edge e-learning platform, which is set to become the virtual reference point for education within the FEI and the equestrian world. Both webinars are presented by equine influenza expert, Professor Ann Cullinane MVB PhD MRCVS, Head of the Virology Unit at the Irish Equine Centre and Chair of the OIE Expert Surveillance Panel (ESP) for equine influenza.

The 45-minute webinar for equine vets is important viewing for all equine practitioners, but particularly FEI veterinarians, as there is a concluding section presented by FEI Veterinary Advisor, Dr Caterina Termine who focuses on the FEI’s equine influenza vaccination requirements.

Prior to this, Professor Cullinane presents a strategic approach to vaccination and explains why the OIE vaccination recommendations propose that vaccines contain both Clade 1 and Clade 2 virus representatives.

The 25-minute horse owner webinar explains what equine influenza is and the measures that owners and riders can take to protect their horses. It includes: how the virus is transmitted, what to do in the event of a ‘flu outbreak; factors affecting the horse’s susceptibility to ‘flu; current recommendations for vaccine choice and vaccination intervals.

During the webinar, Ann reminds owners that influenza viruses change over time, and each year the OIE issues recommendations about which virus strains equine influenza vaccinations should contain. The FEI fully supports the OIE recommendations and encourages owners to discuss these with their vet when their horses are due for vaccination.
