As all veterinarians know, ketamine is an essential medicine; a remarkably safe anesthetic which has been used worldwide for more than 50 years and a drug which has particular value 'in the field and for spay and castration initiatives.
We were concerned last year at efforts by some countries to have the drug put under international scheduling a move that would effectively put access to it at risk in many parts of the world.
Our campaign to promote the importance of ketamine included an online petition signed by more than 14,000 individuals primarily veterinarians - from around the world, together with an infographic showing why ketamine is so important. We also provided regular updates to the media.
Thanks to your efforts and the efforts of others, we are pleased to report that the accessibility of ketamine is now not likely to be discussed by the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs during 2017. This means that access to ketamine is, temporarily at least, not under threat. It is encouraging news but we continue to monitor the work of the CND and the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD) for any sign that they are likely to reconsider their position.
