Reckoning with Recruitment
Many practices have told us how difficult it is to recruit staff at the moment. In our recent survey on recruitment, more than half of the businesses responding did not have a full complement of veterinary surgeons, and 28% of these reported a severe effect on their ability to cover out of hours (OOH) work.
One concern, highlighted by Vet Futures, is that a significant number of graduates become disillusioned and want to leave the profession. Work by Dixon, Kinnison and May suggests that this may be due to the "failure of a new graduate’s conceptualisation of the clinician’s role to align with the reality of first opinion practice." So a new initiative, launched by SPVS and VDS, should make a big difference. GradTrack is designed to provide non-clinical training to veterinary graduates and, importantly, those who support them, helping with the all-important transition from university into practice. You can find out more by clicking on the image below:
But we are conscious of the broader picture too. Beyond that critical induction period, is practice sufficiently rewarding, well recognised and remunerated? We would like to cooperate with BVA on research that is evolving out of the Vet Futures project, by looking at the motivators and barriers for working in first opinion practice.
What are your thoughts? I’'m keen to hear how we can best represent your interests in this important area. You can let us know by commenting on this blog, or emailing me at president@spvs.org.uk
