I’m busy writing my presentation for the management stream of the London Vet Show, titled “Online opportunities for vets”. What has struck me is something as plain as the nose on your face - to establish and grow a successful business you need to be found! This is so obvious it’s ludicrous, yet in the traditional world of veterinary practice it’s not always as apparent as it seems...

Location and personal recommendation have always been THE major factors for driving new clients to a veterinary practice; this is universally true and has not changed one bit, in decades. Yet, it’s the simple stuff like this, that often gets overlooked.

We worked with a practice a couple of years ago in conducting a full marketing audit. Amongst all the “clever stuff” was the simplest recommendation of all - replace your existing sign with one that says “VET” in as large letters as possible. It was probably the most cost-effective bit of advice the owners had ever received, because despite being an established practice situated on one of the main roads leading to the top of the High Street, lots of locals did not know there was a vet right in the centre of town! Was the new sign worth the investment? You betcha!

This was only a couple of years ago and being found today is as important as ever. Yet in that short period of time, the world has moved on: People generally - that includes animal owners - now spend a significant chunk of their daily lives online. Online is where they primarily source information, products and services - with 1,000,000 local searches per month on the word “veterinary” its where they are looking for YOU too!

But try this: Think of any one item you are most likely to purchase for your own animals or identify the question that you are most often asked by your clients. Now Google it. How often does a vet practice pop up in your search? You may be disappointed...yet who is more qualified to provide veterinary information, to advice and sell animal products, than a vet?

Nowadays, vets NEED to be found online. This is more important than ever and it will become more important still. So I guess the burning question for you to ponder is what is your practice doing to be found online right now... and what else could you be doing?

Please come along to The London Vet Show - specifically 5pm on Thursday 21st November - to hear me talk about some of the opportunities the internet has to offer your veterinary business, including being found by people searching for you.

And in the meantime, log onto www.vetmart.net and list your practice....in just a few months, vetmart’s listings have had over 35,000 views, so make sure you are there too and can be found by owners looking for everything your practice has to offer!
