A member of the House of Lords with a keen interest in the veterinary sector has praised a Winchester animal hospital after a guided tour of the state-of-the-art facility.

Baroness Bakewell was given a look behind the scenes at Linnaeus-owned Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists (AMVS) while also highlighting her support for the British Veterinary Nursing Association’s (BVNA) campaign to protect the title of veterinary nurses by law.

Among the other tour highlights for Baroness Bakewell was seeing the hospital’s newly-built cat and dog wards, meeting a patient who was on their feet and eating following brain surgery just the evening before, and having an in-depth conversation with Kathryn Lunn, head of nursing services at AMVS, to learn more about the career framework offered to nurses.

Baroness Bakewell, the Liberal Democrat Lords spokesperson for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: “My visit to AMVS was a great opportunity to see the wonderful work their team is doing in treating patients.

“I saw for myself the real difference their hard work and high level of care is having when I met a canine patient which was back on its feet and eating just hours after brain surgery.”

“Registered veterinary nurses (RVNs) are integral in providing high-quality care for animals.

“They are well trained, highly skilled and dedicated professionals. Currently, anyone, regardless of any training or experience, can call themselves a veterinary nurse, so I am proactively supporting the campaign to protect this valuable title by law.”

Matt Gurney, hospital director at AMVS, said: “It was a pleasure to show Baroness Bakewell around our amazing animal hospital and meet our dedicated team members.

“She seemed really impressed with the range of skills we offer and how this differed from what one might expect from a primary care practice.

“It was also a great opportunity for Baroness Bakewell to show her support for the Registered Veterinary Nurse title campaign and explore what measures could be introduced to protect the title.”

AMVS offers specialist care in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dentistry, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, feline hyperthyroid clinic, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, orthopaedics, and soft tissue surgery.
