ID:	55180 The Veterinary Management Group (VMG) is to offer the 2021 cohort of veterinary and veterinary nursing graduates a year’s free membership, giving them access to a wide range of non-clinical resources, including a new series of ‘first year in practice’ webinars led by the VMG’s directors, template documents and its Facebook discussion forum.
The VMG is also setting up a dedicated early-career discussion forum to enable graduates to share experiences and issues and receive advice from VMG members to help them tackle the additional challenges they may face, having completed their training during the pandemic.
VMG President Rich Casey said: “Exceptional leadership is key to the long-term sustainability of the veterinary sector and our research shows that leadership and business skills are essential for the whole veterinary team, not just those in formal management roles.
“While newly qualified vets and vet nurses will initially be focussed on developing their clinical skills, building an understanding early on as to the skills and behaviours required for success in 21st century veterinary practice will help them to perform successfully as part of a veterinary team. It will also support the future of the profession as we emerge from the pandemic and start looking to the many challenges ahead.
“This year’s cohort has had a particularly tough time,” he added. “Offering the 2021 cohort a year’s free membership is our way of showing that we are proud of their achievements. We also want to reassure them that they are far from alone in their transition into professional practice. They are the future leaders of the veterinary profession and we will help them to be the best they can be.”
Calum McIntyre, President of the Association of Veterinary Students (AVS), said: "The pandemic has been extremely difficult for the profession and veterinary students and our nursing counterparts have been equally affected. However, it has been inspiring to see veterinary associations and individuals rally to support us with the VMG’s kind offer a great example.
“Given the disruption to this cohort’s studies, access to the resources provided by VMG membership will be invaluable, not only in supporting their transition into practice, but also in furthering their professional development. With its focus on the non-clinical elements of our work, VMG membership will help to drive forward positive changes in practice as this year’s graduates begin their professional journeys. AVS is very grateful for this fantastic gesture of support.”
