Leading animal welfare charity Battersea has today announced it has appointed Kelly Brown as its new Director of Finance & Corporate Services, replacing George Ruiz, who will be retiring at the end of the month after first joining the charity in 2013.

Kelly joins Battersea’s Leadership team from Rethink Mental Illness, where she worked as Director of Corporate Resources. Prior to her work with the national mental health charity, Kelly held senior executive positions within practice, public sector and the not for profit sector, including positions with The Law Society, Mental Health UK, The Children’s Trust and the Hurley Group.

With over 20 years’ experience as a finance professional including supporting business turnaround, rapid growth and new commercial start-up ventures, Kelly will have overall accountability for the Finance, IT, Legacy, Audit & Compliance and Retail teams at Battersea when she commences her role on 19 October.

Kelly joins the animal welfare charity in its 160th year of rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming abandoned and unwanted dogs and cats. As well as caring for animals at its three centres, Battersea is increasingly using its profile, voice, and years of expertise to help animals all over the UK and overseas.

Commenting on the new appointment, Battersea’s Chief Executive Claire Horton said:
“Last year Battersea spent £20.3m on caring for animals at our centres and awarded 34 grants to other rescue and rehoming organisations, benefiting an estimated 13,570 dogs and cats worldwide. Our charity is committed to helping and supporting other rescues and their animals and we spend every pound of our income incredibly carefully to ensure we can continue our vital work well into the future. We are delighted that Kelly will soon be joining us at Battersea, and I am confident that her passion and expertise will help steer our charity through these challenging times to achieve our goal to be here for every dog and cat.”

Although this will be Kelly’s first role in the animal welfare sector, she is a keen animal lover and the proud owner of a dog named Alfie. She said:

“Battersea’s dedication to animal welfare and caring for rescue dogs and cats is both inspirational and respected the world over so I am immensely proud and honoured to be joining them as their new Director of Finance and Corporate Services. I look forward to continuing the great work George has achieved and providing excellent support to colleagues and stakeholders so that Battersea can continue to ensure many more cats and dogs have the opportunity of living safe and happy lives”
