The highly-experienced Sarah Mason, already a European and Royal College specialist in oncology, has now become the first clinician to pass stringent examinations to earn a diploma in radiation oncology as well.

Sarah, who practices at Southfields Veterinary Specialists, in Essex, studied intensively for more than a year in readiness for this autumn’s examinations and is delighted to have received recognition from the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM).

Success in the ECVIM examination means that Sarah is now a European specialist in both oncology and radiation oncology, the first person to achieve the titles and the qualification by training and examination.

Sarah said: “I intend to use my experience to grow the radiation and oncology service at Southfields and, with the benefit of our new Linear Accelerator and state-of-the-art hospital, deliver the most advanced treatment options for our veterinary patients.
“I also intend to use my experience and expertise to contribute to the further development of radiation oncology as a specialist qualification in Europe.”
The ECVIM radiation oncology diploma was introduced to increase the number of veterinary radiation oncologists practicing in Europe.
The first were recruited by experience in the field (de facto) or based on American diplomas while the programme to train new radiation oncologists was first offered in 2016.
Sarah immediately signed up, explaining: “I was the first person to register for training and I undertook this with Jane Dobson at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, part of the University of Cambridge.
“The qualification requires a minimum 65 weeks of supervised clinical radiation oncology activity plus academic study.
“Moving to Southfields in April 2018 helped progress my experience, especially working here alongside Jerome Benoit, who has a wealth of experience and expertise in the field of radiation oncology.
“My credentials, a portfolio of clinical work, were accepted in November 2018 and I was registered for the first examination in September 2019. I’m delighted to have been successful and to have achieved this additional and distinguished qualification.”

Daniel Hogan, operations manager at Southfields, said: “Sarah is the first and only person to have achieved this European qualification by examination. This is hugely significant and very prestigious. As well as being an outstanding professional, Sarah is now unique and everyone at Southfields offers her their congratulations.

“It helps illustrate our oncology and radiation departments are among the very best in Europe.

“We have world-class expertise delivering top-quality care; specialised oncology facilities providing cutting edge treatment, and, all backed up by a highly-trained, radiation and chemo-specific nursing team.”

Southfields boasts a world-class staff and state-of-the-art surgical facilities with specialist services in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, orthopaedics, radiation and soft tissue surgery.
