The BSAVA has published a new veterinary manual on backyard poultry. Available this week, the much-anticipated BSAVA Manual of Backyard Poultry Medicine and Surgery is a source of practical and high-quality information to help veterinary surgeons provide the level of care to backyard birds that clients expect and deserve.

In recent years there has been a resurgence in the number of people keeping backyard poultry for a self-sufficient supply of food as well as for breeding and exhibition. Not only do backyard poultry produce fresh food, they can also teach children a great deal about the role of animals in feeding the human population and they provide fascination and enjoyment for those who keep them.

As a result, backyard poultry frequently become an important part of the family and will often be seen as much-loved pets. When a backyard bird becomes ill, therefore, their owner expects access to caring and competent veterinary care, often with an expectation that such care should meet the standard on offer to their dog or cat. However, many veterinary surgeons are unfamiliar with consulting on and treating these birds.

The BSAVA Manual of Backyard Poultry Medicine and Surgery has been written by an international selection of specialist authors. It covers everything from husbandry and basic clinical techniques to medical and surgical treatment of conditions, and more advanced practices such as endoscopy and post-mortem examination.

Extensively illustrated and utilising evidence-based research where available, this new title is a comprehensive starting point for information about backyard poultry medicine and surgery. The manual covers chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, guinea fowl, ornamental pheasants and peafowl. It is hoped that the help and guidance that the manual provides will make treating backyard poultry more interesting and rewarding, and therefore encourage more practitioners to see feathered patients!

Editors Guy Poland and Aidan Raftery said: “We are very proud of the valuable contributions made by all the authors to the manual. We hope that their hard work will provide a useful resource for veterinary practitioners unfamiliar with poultry medicine to deliver improved care for their patients and maybe inspire an interest that they develop further.”
BSAVA Manual of Backyard Poultry Medicine and Surgery is available in a printed edition (£85; £55 to BSAVA members) and online edition (£70.83+VAT; £45.83+VAT to BSAVA members).
