The BSAVA has pledged its support for Rabbit Awareness Week 1st – 9th June 2019, which was launched at the BSAVA Congress last week. This year’s campaign ‘Protect and Prevent’ will be highlighting the impact of the spread of Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease caused by the virus RVHDV2.

“ Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease can be easily vaccinated against by the rabbit owner’s local veterinary practice, yet many rabbits remain unvaccinated”, explains BSAVA President Susan Paterson. “The BSAVA is firmly behind Rabbit Awareness Week’s important ‘Protect and Prevent’ approach to saving pet rabbits in the UK from this devastating disease.”

RAW is a coalition of organisations and welfare charities who are on a mission to improve rabbit welfare by highlighting important rabbit health and welfare messages to vets, owners and retailers. It has been running for 12 years.

“Veterinary professionals are a huge force for improving rabbit welfare,” said Peter Lancaster Head of Marketing at Burgess Pet Care, the company coordinating the campaign. “We are delighted that the BSAVA is once again supporting RAW and look forward to working with its members to help spread the word about ‘Protect and Prevent’.”

Susan Paterson added: “The BSAVA urges all rabbit owners to get their pet vaccinated against this disease and encourages all practices to remind their rabbit owners of the importance of doing this."

The BSAVA will be putting together a special library collection to coincide with RAW, to help vets keep up-to-date with the latest information and research on rabbit health and welfare.
