Medicine (ISFM)/Hill’s Pet Nutrition Award for Outstanding Contributions to Feline Medicine
at the ISFM European Congress in Porto, Portugal, at the beginning of July.
Dr Moriello whose name is synonymous with feline dermatology, was a keynote speaker at
the congress, which was attended by nearly 500 delegates from 38 countries. During the
event she presented seven informative lectures on all aspects of feline dermatology,
including the itchy cat, ringworm, immune-mediated skin disease and manifestations of
stress and systemic disease, as well as leading a masterclass on dermatophytosis.
Karen is Clinical Professor of Veterinary Dermatology at the School of Veterinary Medicine,
the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary
Dermatology. She was awarded the ACVD Award of Excellence in 2005 for outstanding
contributions to service and education and has authored more than 200 manuscripts and
book chapters on small animal dermatology, along with three teaching textbooks. She is also
currently the co-editor of the international journal Veterinary Dermatology. Karen is happy to
admit that she is a ‘cat person’ and her best professional advice is: ‘More is missed for not
looking than for not knowing.’
Dr Andrew Sparkes, Veterinary Director for ISFM said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to give
this award to Dr Karen Moriello – throughout her career, Karen has done an enormous
amount to improve the health of both owned pet cats and also shelter cats through her
pioneering work on dermatophytosis and other aspects of feline dermatology. It is such a
pleasure to be able to recognise the achievement of someone who has done so much to
improve feline welfare in so many ways, and someone who is so generous in sharing her
knowledge and encouraging others.'
